Author: Orthodox Trucker

Hi, my name is Ian. I'm also known as the Orthodox Trucker. Why the name? Well because I'm an Orthodox Christian and a truck driver. Pretty simple, right? I'm also a writer and an Ancient Faith Ambassador. I'm also a loving husband and proud papa. Everything I do under the Orthodox Trucker name is aimed at examining Orthodox Christianity, and how our mundane and ordinary lives intersect with the Kingdom of God. I will also share my general observations, reflections and thoughts about Orthodoxy, and what lessons I have learned throughout my daily adventures. It is my hope that together, we can both learn something new. Stick around if you will, and let's see where the road takes us. Orthodox Christianity through the eyes of a trucker!

Writing beauty in the digital wilderness

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer … Continue reading Writing beauty in the digital wilderness →

Farther’s Day

When I was child, I had trouble spelling the word father. Usually I would throw an extra r into the word, so father became farther. For the next 25 or so years farther's day would become a running joke in my family. I spent the last few days in Pennsylvania attending the Ancient Faith writing … Continue reading Farther’s Day →

The voice in the darkness

You don't belong here. What makes you think you could ever possibly be in the same league as all these other talented people? Why even bother? Those were the thoughts that raced through my mind as I tried to fall asleep. Yesterday was a busy day, with quite a bit of social interaction. Every person … Continue reading The voice in the darkness →

A God who is for All

I have a friend named Roger who is also a truck driver. We actually met in 2013 while on the bus heading to truck driving school in Salt Lake City. He's a few years older than I am, and has lived a very different life before truck driving than I have. But we became fast … Continue reading A God who is for All →

The search for meaning

In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep. From the mountains of faith, to a river so deep. I must be looking for something, something sacred I lost. But the river is wide, and it's too hard to cross... We are all searching for something. Something sacred, something true. Like travelers … Continue reading The search for meaning →

When the smoke clears, there is grace.

This situation happened last year, but I have never shared it with anyone. I thought I would finally tell this amazing story. --- Last summer on a warm afternoon, I was outside burning in the backyard. The flames were quickly consuming all of the brush and excess garbage I threw into it. I didn't look … Continue reading When the smoke clears, there is grace. →

Dealing with Change

How many Orthodox Christians does it take to change a lightbulb? ... Chaaaange??? That was the very first Orthodox joke I ever heard, And while it illuminates the fact that the Orthodox Church has seen less change then other denominations in the world, remember that change is a major part of the natural order. We … Continue reading Dealing with Change →

The anger of a slight injustice

I had a very interesting experience a few weeks ago. It was 2 o'clock in the morning and there was a group of people standing on the sidewalk in front of the local tavern. I live in a small farm town of about 300 people, and for many of those people, the tavern is the … Continue reading The anger of a slight injustice →

The other Orthodox Trucker

This post was orginally written about a month ago, during great lent. I met a fellow orthodox trucker, and struck up a conversation. ------ So today while waiting to get my truck unloaded at the port, I realized the truck next to me had a large orthodox cross hanging in their window. I made a … Continue reading The other Orthodox Trucker →

Time

“Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way... " Time - Pink Floyd. I was first introduced to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon when I worked as a summer camp counselor for the Boy Scouts back in 2003. I was barely 18 … Continue reading Time →
