Welcome back to the Orthodox Trucker blog. I am back after a two-year hiatus. Life’s highways have taken me through diverse landscapes, both literally and metaphorically. As the dust of the road settles, it’s time to reconnect with this digital sanctuary and provide an overdue update on the journey so far. If you’re new, welcome! This is a space where the road meets reflections on faith, life, and the perpetual quest for spiritual balance.
So, what’s been happening, and where have I been? That’s a fantastic question, and I’ll attempt to navigate the past two years in this post. As for my absence, well, there are myriad reasons. Perhaps one could label it as an extended bout of writer’s block. I also reckon it’s a result of consistently postponing and procrastinating, all while getting caught in the rhythmic currents of daily life.
From October 2021 to February 2022, I continued my role at the Toro Driving Academy, serving as their Lead Trainer and assistant manager. It was a period of immense growth, where I not only refined my skills but also learned to drive a school bus. During this time I was still heavily involved as a Subdeacon at St. George’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Portland Oregon. However, in March 2022, a managerial change led me to reevaluate my career path. Knight Portland wanted me back, and with a new manager and an enticing pay raise, I returned, this time as a driver mentor. Once again, my spirituality and connection to God, would be located within a semi truck.
While the road beckoned again, the financial stability and a stronger sense of purpose made this return a more fulfilling experience. The knowledge I give to these new drivers fills me with a hope that, maybe I’m making a difference. In October 2022, my wife and I embarked on the exciting journey of buying our first home. After some initial challenges, as well as some patience, we found the perfect place that we now call home – a cozy three-bedroom house on an acre and a half filled with love and laughter. We made our offer in December of 2022 and signed papers in January. We moved into our new home that February.
Simultaneously, the beginning of 2023 saw the birth of Schrom Farm and Kennel. Leveraging our new property, we transformed it into an urban homestead. Chickens arrived, followed by three beautiful beehives. Soon our homestead started producing fresh eggs, and honey. The dream of sustainable living and fostering a connection with nature began to take shape.
Also In January 2023, I began planning a pilgrimage to St. Herman’s in Kodiak, Alaska. This journey, which took place in August, took me to several churches in Anchorage, a ferry ride from Homer to Kodiak, where I visited the Holy Resurrection Cathedral and St. Herman’s Theological Seminary. The experience was profound, and every step echoed the history and spirituality of Orthodoxy. I initially planned my trip around the idea of making content, but that quickly changed once I landed in Kodiak, for Saint Herman was waiting for me.
September brought me back from the road, to the Whitman County Fair, a time of family, community, and reconciliation. Our son, John, deeply involved in 4-H, showcased his calf. It was also an opportunity to mend relationships with Emily’s family, a healing process that was long overdue.
In October, I briefly left Knight Transportation for what seemed like more home time and better pay. Frustrations and broken promises led me back to Knight, where I resumed my role as a driver mentor, training the next generation of company drivers. Simultaneously, I connected with the local Orthodox parish in Pullman, acknowledging the need for a parish community for both myself, and my family.
During this transformative journey, the reach of my Instagram account, Amazing Orthodox Churches, blossomed, forming a dynamic community that now spans over 6,000 followers. What started as a simple platform for sharing the beauty of Orthodox churches has evolved into a vibrant space, attracting both devout Orthodox believers and those curious about the rich history of the Church.
As I navigate the winding roads and endless highways, still devoted to the trucking life, I find myself simultaneously anchored in my faith. The wheels keep turning, both under the chassis of my truck and in the spiritual journey I continue to tread. Amidst the tasks and responsibilities that lay ahead, I am reminded that the grace of God is my constant companion. It’s a journey where the open road becomes a metaphor for life’s challenges, and through faith and determination, I am certain that every mile brings me closer to the destination of God’s grace and purpose.
Thanks for reading my friends, its nice to be back!
